Introduction to Wuwei City Gansu Province

 

Wuwei City, also called Liangzhou, is located in the east of the Hexi Corridor of Gansu Province, China. She was an important section of the ancient Silk Road. The name of Wuwei is from the “brilliant military puissantness ” of the General Huo Qubin in the Han Dynasty to defeat the Xunnu ethnic group invader in the ancient Hexi Corridor. Wuwei is a famous historical cultural city and opening up city, the capital of tourist symbol of China, the hometown of the Chinese grape wine, the witness place of Tibet belonging to China, and the unique native haunt of the White Yak in the world. She governs Liangzhou District, Minqin County, Gulang County and Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, covers an area of 33 thousand square kilometers, and has a population of 1930 thousand, including 38 ethnic groups, mainly the Han, Tibetan, Hui, Mongolian and so on. In 2003, the GDP of the entire region reached 9001 million yuan, the total fiscal revenue reached 494 million yuan, the annual growth of urban residents’ disposable income per capita was 5253 yuan, and farmers’ net income per capita was 2291 yuan.

 

Wuwei enjoys a typical continental climates ,the annual average temperature is about 7.8 ℃,  annual average precipitation is 60 to 610 mm, annual average sunshine time exceed 2200-3030 hours, and frost-free period is about 73-155 days .The river of Wuwei belongs separately to the two water systems, namely the Shiyanghe River (the inland river) and the Yellow River, with the diversion of water from the Yellow River for raising irrigation project. There are 242million cube meter of the total reservoir capacity in the small-middle reservoir and ponds. There are wide land in Wuwei, which includes 256 thousand hectares of the farmland,1538 thousand hectares of the unused land, 1620 thousand  hectares of the usable  nature grassland , and  11.48 % of the forest cover rate.

 

Wuwei has been famous on its important geographical position "which opens a road through the broad desert, and controls the faucal place of the ancient five-districts."  To the east, she is next to Lanzhou city, to the south is near Xining city, and to the north faces Yinchuan city. She is the east gate of the Hexi Corridor, the railways of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang and Wuwei- Gantang, the Nation Highway 312 pass through the city. The road of the province and the local levels radiate in all directions. Wuwei has become the flourishing business place of the commercial and trade in the Hexi Corridor because of the integrated market system, the more floating population and the blooming purchasing capabilities. Wuwei owns the convenient traffic, good foundation of post and telecommunication. She has formed the good net systems linking with all the parts in China and the world. The complete establishments of power, water-supply and central heating in the city have been basically guaranteed for economic development and urban residents’ life.

 

Here are the flat land, the rich resources of sunlight, heat and land ,the plentiful sunshine, dry-climate and little rainfall, the extremes of temperature between daytime and night, many kinds of land ,more planting areas and the more richness of the species. The special geography environment and the weather conditions have made  Wuwei quite suitable place for planting the brewing grape. She has quite a lot in common with Bordeaux, France, on the latitude and climate,nd was called “the Bordeaux in China”.  Wuwei is the important base of the commercial grains in China, also the production bases of the famous agriculture products and meats as well as the bases of the natural green food in Gansu Province. The establishments of the agriculture industry bases, with 53 thousand hectares of processing corn, 27 thousand hectares of commercial vegetables, 20 thousand hectares of high-quality melons, 20 thousand hectares of breed-making, 7 thousand hectares of brewing grape, 10 thousand hectares of beer-barley and 8 thousand hectares of cotton and other livestock products, make the products, including  grape wine , corn-starch, flour, black melon - seeds , Huanghe sweet melon, vegetables and the white-yak and their serial products , the representative industrial brands with the great developing potential.

 

The mineral resources with more varieties and large reserves have been founded in the City.  According to the geological survey, about 30 species of the mineral resources and over 100 mineral spots have been discovered, including ferrous metals (iron, manganese, titanium and vanadium), non-ferrous metals (copper, nicks, zinc and so on), rock-gold and rock-silver, rare-earth metal, energy - resources (coal and oil- shale), phosphorous, barite, sulphide - iron, chemical raw materials, construction materials. All the mineral resources supply the good conditions for developing the   characteristic mineral industries.

 

Wuwei owns the centuries-old history, rich cultural heritages, particular natural sceneries and multiform ethnologic amorous -feelings. There are 543 relics and historical sites in the city. There are about 40,000    items (volumes) of relics stored in the museums. Among the relics, the Leitai Han Dynasty Tomb, is the place unearthed the Bronze Galloping Horse, the Symbol of China’s Tourism, the Xixia  Monument, is addressed as “a living dictionary” by scholars from home and abroad, the Wuwei  Confucian  Temple, named the champion of the ancient  education schools , is well know as “the top Academy of learning”, the  Tiantishan Grottoes, is considered “the senior ancestor of the Chinese ancient grottoes”, the Baitashi Temple (White Pagodas), is the historical witness place of Tibet belonging to China,  the Haizang Temple , is the  fabulous place the Xuanzhuang of the Tang Dynasty rested for collecting the Sutras  from the West,  the Luoshisi  Tower, is the  Holy land  of the Buddhism , the Dayongsi Bell , the ancient sites of the Great Wall,  " three-gorges " natural sights, Wuwei Desert Park, the Endangered-wild Animals Breeding Center, Minqin Desert Reservoir, which is the largest one in the Asia. All of these have laid a solid foundation for visits, exploration, investigation and so on.

 

The industry systems relating to brewing, light-chemical industry, food processing, textile industry have been formed, Through these years development, there are 5,700 enterprises, including 3 listed companies, i.e. Huangtai Group, Ronghua Group, and Mogao Group, and 2,000 products, the mainly products are wheat flour, starch, alcoholic, wine, beer, fumigating vinegar, glutamic acid, lysine, vegetable oil, food, beverage, yarn of flax and so on. Among them, Liangzhou Huangtai wine series, Mogao dry-red (white) grape wines, Xiliang beer, Yunxiao fumigating vinegar, are appraised as “the well-know make of provincal-class”. The Mogao ice grape wine has been appointed as using in the Nation's banquets.

 

At recent years, a series of preferential policies have been provided and the good conditions for investment have been created. Wuwei is one of the best places of investment environment in Gansu Province.
